The Sustainable Agriculture Coalition is a national alliance of farm, rural development and conservation groups organized in 1988 to interject grassroots sustainable agriculture perspectives into federal agricultural and environmental policies and programs. SAC member groups advocate for federal policies and programs to support small and mid-sized family farms, protect natural resources, promote healthy rural communities, and provide nutritious and healthy food to consumers.

SAC pools and organizes the collective insight and recommendations of grassroots farm, rural, and conservation organizations from across the country and then provides direct Washington, D.C. representation and helps member groups promote citizen engagement in the policy process. By bringing grassroots perspectives to the table normally dominated by big business, SAC levels the playing field for small and mid-size farmers and gives voice to sustainable agriculture practitioners who every day are working for healthy farms, good food, vibrant communities, and excellence in land stewardship

  • Brings together diverse partnerships to move policy options and strategies forward;
  • Conducts public education and policy advocacy and represents the concerns of sustainable agriculture practitioners to Congress, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and other federal administrative agencies; and
  • Builds the power of the sustainable agriculture movement by strengthening the capacity of SAC member groups to work toward their policy goals.
